The Mathews High School junior varsity softball team picked up a pair of victories in recent action, edging out the King William Cavaliers, 2-1, on April 14 and defeating Gloucester by a 10-5 margin last Thursday.
The JV Lady Devils won against King William at home. As a team, the Lady Devils batted .273, putting up only six hits of the game contributed by Chesapeake West with two and one each from Ellie Armistead, Hannah Smith, Shayla Wheeler and Ashley Foster. King William’s defense played well, stranding a number of Mathews baserunners. Armistead struck out seven batters in the win.
The Lady Devils had a more productive offensive performance on April 21 against the Gloucester Dukes. The team batted .458 with 11 hits contributed by Armistead and Wheeler picking up three apiece; Smith with two and Raven Schlosshan, Foster and Rebecca Mullins each with one.
Justice Parlett pitched for Mathews and allowed only one hit. Throwing stronger as the game went on, she led the team to a victory with seven strikeouts in the last three innings.
The JV Lady Devils were scheduled to meet up with West Point Pointers on Tuesday at MHS. Today, the team travels to Middlesex to face the Chargers.
