The Mathews High School junior varsity volleyball team started its season Tuesday with a win over Rappahannock’s JV squad. Mathews beat the visiting Raiders two sets to none, 25-23 and 25-13.
After a well fought game, the JV Lady Devils had a total of 48 serves with only six errors. The JV team’s setter, Morgan Crittenden, led the team in aces with nine, Brooklyne Fulford and Aly Jackson followed with three apiece, and libero Olivia Coons contributed two.
The Lady Devils faced an intimidating offense from Rappahannock, although it was nothing the defense could not handle. Whitney Bohannon and Coons led the team in digs with three each. Lily Jaroz, Chloe Schiable, and Crittenden contributed two apiece.
Mathews fought hard in two sets to win the first with a strong defense and a quick innovative offense. Coons contributed four kills to the game, and Crittenden and Chelsea Armistead each contributed one. Crittenden also contributed to the offense with three assists.
