JV girls fall to Woodside, beat Lancaster

The Mathews High School junior varsity softball team split a pair of home games last week, falling to Woodside last Thursday and beating Northern Neck foe Lancaster on Friday.

In last Thursday’s game, Mathews was playing a much older and more experienced Group 5A team in Woodside, and it showed in the final score, 16-2.

Mathews played well for four complete innings, trailing 6-2, but later innings the Lady Devils did not execute well on defense and had only two hits and a walk, while Woodside added another 10 runs.

Chesapeake West led the team at the plate going 2-for-3, along with Abbie Hudgins, Hailey Winborn, Lauren Dalton and Kelsey Ryan contributing one hit each. Friday’s game against Lancaster pitted two very young JV teams against each other, with Mathews winning 4-2. Vallin Jenkins pitched the complete-game victory, striking out seven.
