JV Devils open with two wins

The Mathews High School junior varsity baseball team scored a commanding victory in its season opener against Rappahannock, beating the Raiders, 13-3, last Thursday.

Starting on the mound was Cody Tunstall, who gave up only one earned run while facing 16 batters in four innings. Brandon Williams stepped up to the mound efficiently closing out the game. Williams threw 19 pitches to five batters without giving up any earned runs. He led the bats going two-for-three with three RBIs. Payton Blake, Jalen Matthews, Tyler Thompson and Tunstall each contributed one RBI.

On Monday, the JV Devils improved their record to 2-0 with another lopsided win, defeating the visiting Essex Trojans by the slaughter rule in five innings, 16-3.
