JV Devils close out season with win

The Mathews High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team concluded its 2015-2016 season this week with a loss to Gloucester and a victory over King and Queen.

In last Wednesday’s home contest against Gloucester, the Blue Devils were missing three starters, dressing only eight players, and team captain Jonny McCann went out with an injury in the first quarter.

Gloucester started out on a 22-0 run, with the Devils not scoring until the second quarter. The halftime score was 24-2. Gloucester eventually won 55-19. The Blue Devils’ high scorer was Christian Williams, with seven points.

Mathews went out on a high note Tuesday, beating King and Queen at home, 38-36. The Devils did not perform well in the first half, giving away many turnovers and bad passes, and getting vastly outrebounded on the offensive and defensive ends.
