JV Devils beat Dukes, Eagles during the week

The Mathews High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team posted wins over Washington and Lee and Gloucester, while losing to Charles City this past week.

On Dec. 6, the Devils came back from a one-point deficit going into the fourth quarter to beat Washington and Lee, 50-46.

Mathews’ leading scorer was Caleb Thomas, with 20 points, followed by Landon Green with eight (including a three-pointer to close out the first half), Nasir Thomas with six, Damien Walters with five, Justin Ashberry with four, Chase Lewis with three, and Patrick Blake and Tyrese Brooks who both had two points.

On Friday, the Devils traveled to Charles City to take on a stout Panthers squad. Mathews fell behind early with careless defense and sloppy offense, and never fully recovered, falling 55-36. 

The Blue Devils were led by Caleb Thomas, who had 15 points. Also contributing were Marc Smith with five, Walters with four, and Blake, Green, Brooks, and Jerry Velez with three points each. On ...
