JV Devils beat Chargers, Islanders in recent action

The Mathews High School jayvee football team picked up two victories on the road in recent action, securing victories over rival Middlesex and AA Poquoson.

Both wins featured strong play from the defense and solid offensive play. In the Sept. 1 victory over Middlesex, freshman Dayshon Williamson scored three touchdowns and gained over 200 rushing yards. Ryan Ewell quarterbacked the Devils and had a touchdown pass to freshman DeAndre Foster. Freshman Jacob Green had a strong showing on both sides of the ball.

In the jayvee Devils most recent win, an 8-6 victory over Poquoson on Sept. 8, Jacob Green was a standout both at linebacker and fullback. Foster scored the only Mathews touchdown on a pass from Ewell. The team clinched the win with an interception to stop the Islanders in the last minute of the game.
"It was a tough defensive struggle," said MHS jayvee head coach Tony Forrest. "I was very proud of the effort and poise shown by our kids."
