Juneteenth was delightful

Juneteenth 2022 in Gloucester was delightful. The weather was perfect; the music was inspiring; the words were enlightening. The First United Baptist Church was a gracious host, and in the shade under its trees, people enjoyed themselves.

The event was two days shorter and in a different location than originally scheduled, thanks to a post on social media promising violence. I know law enforcement determined the threat was not credible, but not in time to prevent cancellations. And given recent mass shootings, the idea that a man who posts pictures of weapons and comments about violence poses no threat is, frankly, hard to swallow. After all, Flat Iron Crossroads based its decision to cancel on the advice of its lawyer.

Juneteenth is not a simple holiday. While the original Juneteenth was just in Texas, it has become the name and date to celebrate liberation from slavery for all our states. While it consciously recognizes the continuing unequal treatm...
