July 4 fireworks return to Mathews

The skies over Mathews will be aglow once again this year on Saturday night to celebrate Independence Day. Thanks to the generous donations of residents and businesses, the annual fireworks display will be held, beginning just after 9 p.m. at Mathews High School. The rain date will be Sunday.

“We’re going to have a fantastic show,” said Mathews County Fireworks Committee spokesperson Charles Ingram. “We’re really looking forward to a good one.”

Shuttle buses will be running from Thomas Hunter Middle School to the high school beginning at 7 o’clock. The free shuttle will run until fireworks begin and will start taking visitors back to THMS after the show.

Gates to view the show at the high school will also open prior to 7 p.m. and admission is free. Though there will be no formal entertainment, Ingram said the concession stand will be open serving food and drinks to guests.
