Julian W. Lewis, better known as “Sammy,” of Cobbs Creek, Virginia, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Lewis, and his parents, Julian F. Lewis and Sarah Lewis.
He leaves his son, John W. Lewis, his wife Brooke Lewis, and their children, Jacob and Charlotte, and numerous cousins to cherish his memory.
Sammy was a 1957 graduate of Mathews High School and graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1961. He worked his way up and sailed on numerous vessels, but spent most of his time aboard the oil tanker, the Overseas Ulla, as the Captain. He affectionately called her “my girl.” He was a member of Mathews Chapel, and he loved his family, friends, dogs, and community so very much. His charisma and storytelling ability was unrivaled and will be dearly missed. He leaves such a huge hole in our lives, but we find comfort in knowing he is with the Lord.
“May you have following seas and fair winds, forever.”
