JULIAN DOUGLAS ‘DOUG’ WILTON

Julian Douglas “Doug” Wilton passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on January 16, 1938 in Kentucky, he exemplified integrity, dedication, and service throughout his life.

Doug graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in 1962 and was later awarded a Doctor of Jurisprudence.

He then joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served as an officer for 28 years. His dedication and commitment to duty and leadership inspired those who served alongside him and left a lasting impact on the service. He retired as a Commander.

In 1964, Doug married his next-door neighbor, best friend, and soulmate, Jackie. They had a wonderful and exciting life together, which ended too soon.

The Wilton family first saw Mathews County in March 1971 and began looking for a place to call home. They settled in Hallieford and met many wonderful friends while serving the community they loved. Doug served as the Magistrate for a few years and was an active member of the Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Mathews Memorial Library Board, Mathews Maritime Foundation, Mathews Historical Society, American Legion, and the Mathews County Planning Commission.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jackie; son, David Wilton (Tracey); daughter, Bess Myerson (Eric); granddaughter, Sarah Wilton Ramos (Chris); grandson, Zachary Wilton, and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076; Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, Va. 23109, or Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 125, Cobbs Creek, Va. 23035.
