The Judy G. Ward Scholarship Benefit Concert will be hosted by the Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, with refreshments afterwards. This scholarship was endowed to continue a legacy in honor of Judy Godsey Ward, a Mathews citizen who exemplified putting service to her community above self, a release stated. A celebrated and talented musician and songwriter, a performance of Ward’s composition of “Crickets On A Hill” is planned for a new audience later this year in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence. Ward wrote the musical which was put on by a talented local cast in 1976 for the Bicentennial celebration, highlighting Mathews County’s participation in the Revolutionary War. She played and sang at popular local venues and once went on a USO tour for the troops.
