Judicial conference next week on drainage issue

A judicial settlement conference in the matter of the Virginia Commissioner of Highways versus Hyco Corner will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, in the jury assembly room of the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse.

The case is one of two that have caused a delay in a Virginia Department of Transportation drainage project for downtown Mathews. The drainage project calls for installing new, larger drain pipes under the road at three locations, the most northern of which is Hyco Corner. There, drainage runs under Buckley Hall Road from a ditch adjacent to Chesapeake Bank to a ditch adjacent to the gas station. The ditch empties into Put-In Creek.

The second site is at Food Lion, where a drain empties into large pipes under Main Street that were installed years ago by the Faulkner family, but that will be replaced by new, larger pipes.
