Joyce Still Gibson, 90, of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away on May 9, 2026.
Mrs. Gibson was born on December 19, 1935 in Cascade, Virginia. She spent most of her adult life in Richmond. She was an active member and leader at River Road Church, Baptist, where she served as a Stephen Minister, and held leadership roles in the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club and other Richmond women’s clubs.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was much loved by family and friends, known for being a true Southern lady. She was called “Honey” by her grandchildren.
Mrs. Gibson spent her career as an educator, teaching high school students before joining the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she taught English Literature and Freshman Composition. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, and her master’s degree at the University of Virginia. Her passion for shaping young minds touched countless students over the years.
She enjoyed playing bridge, watching Jeopardy and Richmond Spiders basketball, spending time with family at Sunset Beach, N.C., cooking, and reading.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her parents, Harold James Still and Elma Joyce Rutherford, and her husband of 65 years, Harold David Gibson Sr. She is survived by her sons, Harold David Gibson Jr. (Sherry), James Newton Gibson (Dana), and Kenneth William Gibson (Beth); granddaughters, Ellen Paige Gibson, Emily Catherine Gibson, and Katherine Elizabeth Gibson, and grandson, John “Jack” Kenneth Gibson.
The family extends its gratitude to the staff at Sanders Assisted Living, Heron Cove Skilled Nursing, and the hospice care team, including Megan Mooney.
Funeral services will be held at River Road Church, Baptist sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Westhampton Cemetery on Patterson Avenue at 12 noon. Pastors Daniel Bagby and Mike Clingenpeel will conduct the service.
