JOYCE ELLEN SIMMONS

Joyce Ellen Simmons, 91, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, July 27, 2018.

She was born on June 10, 1927 in Halesworth, England. She then came to the United States in 1952. Joyce first made her home in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, with her husband, William Louis Simmons Sr. She spent her time raising their three children and cooking and baking for family and friends. Everybody knew her home was always open and you could always go there to get a hot meal or a sweet treat. 

Joyce was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was an active member in Providence Baptist Church where she spent many of her Wednesdays and Sundays with friends and Sunday school children. She will be so dearly missed by everyone who got the pleasure to know her.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy May Bacon; her father, Sidney James Bacon; her husband, William Louis Simmons Sr.; her sister, Janet Mary Lindgren, and her two sons, Sidney Harold Simmons and William Louis Simmons Jr. 

She is survived by her brother, Cecil “Nobby” Bacon and his wife Pearl; her daughter, Ellen Simmons Picardat and her husband Frank; her grandchildren, Dakotah Skye Mayo, William Baker Picardat and Janet Simmons Deal, and great- grandson, Wesley West. 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Joyce’s amazing caretakers, Debra Wiggins, Jennifer Weston and her daughter, Summer. They were there for any and all of Joyce’s needs and also became great friends of Joyce and the family.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Chris McMillan was at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2018, at Providence Baptist Church, Hayes. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, July 29, 2018, from 4-5 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
