One hundred and sixteen persons donated blood for the cause of humanity, through the Mathews Red Cross, to the Tidewater Regional Blood Bank, located in Norfolk. The blood-collecting unit was set up in the auditorium of Mathews High School on Oct. 30. This was the first visit of the American Red Cross Bloodmobile to Mathews. Although the goal of 150 was not reached, local Red Cross officers were pleased with the response. Twenty-six rejections were made: two for being over 60 years of age, hay fever cases, low hemoglobin, and other medical reasons.

Now that Mathews is in the Red Cross Blood Program, any of the residents ill in a hospital that participates in this program may receive blood when transfusions are needed.
