JOSEPH CARLYLE BROWN JR.

Joseph Carlyle Brown Jr., 67, of Hayes, died July 3, 2011 at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

He was a loving husband, a dedicated father and family man, a community leader and a friend to all. Throughout his life he believed faith, family, honesty and integrity were the cornerstones of success.

He was the son of Joseph Carlyle Brown Sr. and Virginia Linthicum Brown who preceded him in death. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and the Abingdon Ruritan Club. He was also a member of the Gloucester Genealogical Society and the Virginia Historical Society.

Carlyle (also known as Carl) graduated from Gloucester High School in 1961, Christopher Newport College in 1964 and the College of William and Mary in 1967. After 27 years of service to Dominion Resources as Director of Accounting Services, overseeing the Eastern, Southern and Northern Divisions, he retired and returned to Gloucester County.

He proudly served on the Board of Directors for the Dominion Credit Union. He was active in the community wherever he lived. While residing in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he served as President of United Way, a member of the Board of Adjustments for the city of Roanoke Rapids, and helped establish the First Church Trust Fund for the First United Methodist Church. He was President of the Roanoke Rapids Jaycees and was awarded the honor of lifetime membership. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Carlyle loved fishing and sports, especially his beloved Redskins, and served as a dedicated coach and mentor to hundreds of young people.

He will be remembered for his dedication and love for his family, friends and community and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Rowe Brown, and his sons, Kenneth Carlyle Brown and Matthew Francis Brown and their wives, Melissa Summers Brown and Lisa Stransky Brown; his grandchildren, Francesca Rae Brown, Bryce John Brown, Fletcher Matthew Brown, Mitchell Carlyle Brown and Kylie Michelle Brown; his brother, William Keith Brown and wife Opal DeLong Brown; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service, conducted by the Rev. Arthur L. Wolz Jr., will be held Thursday, July 7, at Bethany United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday, July 6, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
