JOSEPH ALEXANDER “J.A.” WALKER JR.

Mr. Joseph Alexander “J.A.” Walker Jr., of Gloucester, died peacefully in his home with family on May 12, 2018, after a long illness. He was 84 years old.

He was born April 19, 1934, in Portsmouth, to the late Joseph Alexander Walker Sr. and Mary Edith Walker. J.A. was also predeceased by his grandparents, James Felix Walker, founder of Pine Grove Dairy Farms and Clara B. Walker; his brother, Cosmo D. Walker Sr.; sister, Mary Jo Langston, and first wife, Joan F. Walker.

After serving a tour in the U.S. Air Force, he came home to work for the family owned business, Pet Dairy. He then proceeded to farm with his brother, Cosmo D. Walker Sr. and was also the owner of several commercial properties. He became an avid traveler and explored most of the world. He was a great supporter of the local restaurants.

He is survived by his wife, Etna Nottingham Walker; daughter, Debra Walker McCarter (David) of Chesapeake; son, Joseph Alexander Walker III (Tanya) of Portsmouth; stepdaughter, Paige K. Solomon of Norfolk; grandchildren, Lindsay M. Riddle (Dan) of Suffolk, Morgan M. Leishear (Doug) of Portsmouth, Hunter S. McCarter of Portsmouth, Megan N. Long (Jordan) of Chesapeake, and Joseph Alexander Walker IV of Portsmouth; stepgrandchildren, Danielle C. Riddle, Michael T. Riddle, Miller T. Solomon and Russell D. Solomon; great-grandchildren, Andrew J. Riddle, Liam J. Bales, Charlotte Harper-Mae Leishear; half-sisters, Jodi A. Bowman of Chesapeake, and Sandy Walker Keeling (Thomas) of Portsmouth, and many nephews.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, 4645 George Washington Memorial Highway, White Marsh. A reception will follow in the church parish hall.
