Jonathan Moore arraigned on charge of killing parents

Jonathan Thomas Moore of New Point, who was arrested last week in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Adam and Melissa Moore of New Point, was arraigned in Mathews Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Wednesday on two charges each of 1st degree murder and using a knife in the commission of a felony. A preliminary hearing in his case was set for Sept. 7.

Moore was not physically in the courtroom, but appeared via video from the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center, where he was transferred on Tuesday from Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

Retired Newport News Judge Judith A. Kline explained to Moore that the two murder charges are Class 2 felonies and the two weapons charges are Class 6 felonies. Moore said he couldn’t afford an attorney, so Kline appointed Attorney Deborah S. Goodwin of Akers & Cleator Law Group in Williamsburg to represent him.
