JOHN DUVAL WINSTON

John Duval Winston passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.

Johnny was born in Richmond on Sept. 5, 1953 and grew up in the Lochhaven neighborhood where he developed so many of the friendships that he would retain throughout his life. He was a devoted son, husband, uncle, and a true friend. He was predeceased by his parents, the Honorable John W. Winston and Margaret “Peggy” Duval Winston.

On April 28, 1990, he married the love of his life, Lee Monroe Winston. Together they enjoyed travelling, golfing, boating, spending time at their second home in Mathews, Va., and doting on their many nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Lee, his sister, Judith Winston Cannon and husband Kevin; sister-in-law, Katie Carney; brothers-in-law, Jay Monroe and wife Kelly Moss, and Michael Monroe. He is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews, Martha, Celia, Julien and his wife Hannah Cannon; Elizabeth, Marie, and Marshall Carney; Jason, Jack, Hannah Lee, Joshua, and Jacob Monroe.

John was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry. He volunteered at the Park Place Soup Kitchen, was an avid fan of Old Dominion University football and basketball, and a supporter of the ODU Athletic Foundation. He was also a great fan of the Washington Redskins and Virginia Tech Hokies. His “”claim to fame” was singing in the St. Paul’s children’s choir at the funeral service for General Douglas MacArthur in April of 1964.

He was devoted to the care of his parents in their later years, and always made it his priority to reach out to his friends and family. He will be missed by each of them.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk followed by a memorial service at St. Paul’s Church, Norfolk, at 11 o’clock.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Paul’s Endowment.
