JOHN ALBA LONG JR.

John Alba Long Jr. of Mathews, passed away peacefully at his home and went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011.

He was born to John and Jennie Long in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 4, 1931.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a superintendent for Ritchie Kurbo Construction and other companies in Newport News, Va. He was also employed by Mobjack Bay Seafood and Thousand Trails. He enjoyed camping, fishing, collecting old cars and telling a "good ole story."

He is preceded in death by his father and his first wife, Bobbie Childers.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Haywood-Long; his mother, Jennie Long; five children by his first wife, Rita Tetterton, Debra Grunden, David Long, Robert Long, and Roy Long and their spouses; three step-children, Linda Hunley, William Nelson Haywood and Vernon Grady Haywood and his wife Sue; 17 grandchildren; one step-granddaughter, Brittney, and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Long and Jerry Long; two sisters, Joann Brown and Sue Tincher and their spouses; and many nieces, nephews, plus many more friends and family.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church in Mathews. Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m. at the church. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
