JOHN A. GUY SR.

John A. Guy Sr. (Pop) of Gwynn’s Island, died Aug. 17, 2018 in the early morning hours with his family at his side.

John was born on July 7, 1937, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mildred, and his brother, Joe.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Merle; his sons, Ed (Stephanie), John Jr. (Nancy) and Henry; his grandchildren, Trey (Candace), Chris (Kelsey) and Aaron; and great-grandchildren, Madi Grace, Quaide, Charlotte, Caerwyn, Adaline, and Elsie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Emma; brother-in-law, Lynn (Susan), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was an active member and deacon at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. He retired from the Newport News Fire Department in 1972, and later founded Gloucester Civil Process, where he worked until the time of his passing. He enjoyed his daily interactions with everyone he came in contact with.

The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital for their kind and loving care of Pop.

A service to celebrate John’s life was held on Monday, Aug. 20 at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, with visitation at 11 a.m. and services followed at noon. There was a reception in the church fellowship hall at the conclusion of the service. Interment followed in Gwynn’s Island Cemetery. 

Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, assisted the family with the arrangements.
