JOHN A. GRAY

John Ashby Gray, 76, of Fredericksburg, Va., lost his battle with cancer July 9, 2016 at Mary Washington Hospital.

He grew up in Gloucester, and was a son of the late William Nelson and Elizabeth Roane Gray.     

John was a graduate of Virginia Tech and a 33-year career employee of the Virginia Tech Extension Service. Following retirement he continued his interests in agriculture and horticulture within related fields.

John was a veteran having served four years in the United States Navy. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and for many years raised and trained beagles for rabbit hunting. 

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Laverne; children, Scott (Sylvia) and Keith (Kelly) Gray, Tricia Wells (Marcus), and stepdaughters, Julie Rogers (Charlie) and Lisa Mackey; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, their wives, and numerous cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 23, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 164 New Hope Church Road, Fredericksburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to this church.
