JESSE WILLIAM CORBETT

Jesse William "JW" Corbett of Mathews, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Sanders Senior Living Community, Gloucester, Va.

JW was born in Mathews County, Va., on June 9, 1921. He attended the Lee-Jackson and Cobbs Creek elementary schools and Mathews High School, Mathews.

He graduated from the United States Maritime Service’s Officer School, Fort Trumbull, New London, Conn., as a 3rd Mate. He was in Merchant Marine for 40 years and was in the World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from Masters, Mates and Pilots Association as a chief mate. JW received an honorable discharge from the United States Coast Guard.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Hudgins; wife, Erva Lee Sutton Corbett, and son, Danny Kaye Corbett.

JW is survived by his daughter, Janie Delores Corbett of Williamsburg; daughter-in-law, Linda Kruse Corbett of Smyrna, Ga.; two grandchildren, Julie Corbett Feagin and husband Ryan of Atlanta, Ga., and Michael Sutton Corbett and wife Zaira of Marietta, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Kaye Feagin, William Feagin, Sadie Corbett and Sophia Corbett; brother-in-law, Norman O. Sutton and wife Virginia; sister-in-law, Jean Sutton, and many cousins.

Visitation was held Saturday, March 24, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. A graveside service was conducted by Pastor Charlotte Sachtjen immediately following the viewing in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Va.
