Jerry W. Thornton of Gwynn’s Island, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017.
He was born March 13, 1936 in Norfolk and was predeceased by his mother, Florence Forrest Thornton; his father, Samuel L. Thornton, and his sister, Joan Thornton.
Jerry spent a good part of his life traveling and working around the United States, especially in the desert and mountain wildernesses, camping out and prospecting for gold, which was his main passion. A gifted storyteller, he had an inexhaustible fund of vivid tales about the colorful human and animal encounters he’d had. Jerry possessed a heart that caused him to help anybody who needed it, even down to the smallest creature, many of whom he took under his wing. His lively curiosity about all aspects of life encompassed everything from marine biology to ancient cultures and made him a treasure trove of interesting facts.
He will be missed by his sister, Linda Thornton; brother, Sam Thornton of LaMesa, California; cousins, John Forrest and Tommy Turner; and his close family/friends, Anna Osborne and Shane and Shannon Frailey.
