JEAN FRANCES DRUMMOND BROADDUS

Jean Frances Drummond Broaddus, 92, of Bagby in Caroline County, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, surrounded by her family.

During her life Jean was a devoted daughter, sister, farmer’s wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born April 21, 1926 at her family home in Painter, Accomack County, on the Eastern Shore, Virginia, to Lynwood and Almyra Ennis Drummond. She moved to Caroline County in 1949 when she married Woodford Bates Broaddus.

Jean was a graduate of Central High School and the 1947 class of Mary Washington College. She taught a few years before starting a family and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service as rural carrier for Milford.

She had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Caroline County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Caroline Genealogical Society, and Caroline Historical Society. Jean was the 1993 Virginia Farm Woman of the Year and was appointed in 1997 by Governor George Allen to serve on the Virginia Agricultural Council for several years.

Jean was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church for nearly 70 years, where she served as Sunday school teacher, President of the UMW, and assistant church treasurer for over 50 years.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Woodford Broaddus; her parents, Lynwood and Almyra Drummond, and her infant sister, Eloise Drummond. Surviving are her children, Woodford Ennis Broaddus and wife Jae Yon, Mary Frances Hunley and husband Danny, Lynwood Drummond Broaddus and wife Becky,  Susan Broaddus Huffman and husband Tommy,  and John Carroll Broad-

dus; grandchildren, Angela Copp and husband Tim,  Jean Maria Broaddus, Stephanie Sutton and husband Scott, Bates Broaddus and wife Stephanie, Heather Criner and husband Matt, Joyce Carpenter and husband Seth,  Candace Broaddus and Tommy Huffman III; great-grandchildren, Sydney Copp, Mackenzie Copp, Abby Wright, Kelsey Sutton, Ella Sutton, Walter Criner, Wyatt Carpenter, Grady Carpenter, Silas Broaddus, and Whitley Criner; her brother, John R. Drummond and wife Joyce; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed by her family.

The family received friends at Storke Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Bowling Green, from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12. A service will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 24410 Mattaponi Trail, Milford, at 2 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 13. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
