Jayvee girls improve to 12-0

The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team improved its record to 12-0 during the past week with wins over Middlesex, Nandua and King William.

Traveling to Middlesex last Thursday, Mathews began the game with what coach Tommy Eriksen called their worst half of basketball this year. "We came out and thought everything would just happen during the game," he said. "Middlesex outhustled and plain outplayed us during the first half."

Mathews returned in the second half eager to cut into the four-point deficit. The Blue Devils played better defense and took much better shots in the last two periods to defeat the home team, 31-22.

Eriksen praised Madison Owens and Veronica Cosby for their post play during the contest. Owens and Maria Spadaccini led the Lady Devils with eight points each, followed by Cosby with six points. Hunter Thomas added five points while Keely Crittenden and Madison South contributed two points apiece.
