Jayvee Devils beat Middlesex in season finale

In a fitting end to its season, the Mathews High School jayvee volleyball team pulled out a thrilling three-set victory over Middlesex last Thursday, winning the deciding set by a 16-14 margin.

"The girls came out playing hard in the first game, great passing and hitting," said jayvee coach Tina Reece. "The second game did not go as well. They lost their motivation and started making errors that cost them, and they were being out hustled. In the third game, they pulled it together and played tough for the solid 15 points, never letting up."
Mathews won the first and third sets, 25-13 and 16-14, losing the second, 25-9. The win caps an 11-5 season overall for the Devils, including an unbeaten record in the Tidewater District.

Leading the jayvee Devils in kills was Kai McCann with seven, followed by Isabelle Turner with five, Morgan Driskell with three and Anna Hudgins with one.
