An angel summoned Jannie Whiting, 94, of Gloucester, Va., on June 12, 2025. She was born on February 15, 1931 in Elizabethtown, N.C., to the late Lizzie and Sylvester McDowell. Her fond memories will be forever cherished by her husband of 67 years, Alfred Raymond Whiting; her two children, Jennifer Whiting and Marck Whiting (Kelley); grandchildren, Keyattii Spataro, Khayleb Whiting, Jayden Whiting, Jazlyn Whiting and Krisna Whiting; great-grandchildren, Addison Stammer, Victoria Stammer, Emma Stammer and Ezekiel Whiting; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by son, Alfred Whiting Jr.; three sisters, Bell Cromartie, Lucy McCoy and Helen Johnson, and nine brothers, Wilton McDowell, George McDowell, Charlie McDowell, Sylvester McDowell Jr., Robert McDowell, Lee McDowell, Richard McDowell, Frank McDowell and Ernest McDowell.

A service for Jannie will be held at Morning Glory Baptist Church on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 12 noon. She will be placed in church at 11 a.m. for viewing.
