JAMES TYLER WEST

James Tyler West, 92, of Gloucester Point, died April 8, 2013 at Riverside Walter Reed Convalescent Center.

James was a lifelong resident of Gloucester County. He served in the U.S. Navy from October 1941 to March 1946 during WWII, and later was employed and retired from the fire department at the Naval Weapons Station in York County, Va. James was a member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church.

James was committed to his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters but most important he was a devoted husband to his wife of 64 years, Dorothy O. West. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Lambert and Maggie West; sisters, Isabel Lewis, Ruby Emerson and Mamie Coates; brothers, Linwood West, Edward “Jimmy” West, and son, Wayne Tyler West.

James is survived by his wife, Dorothy O. West; sons, Thomas Mitchell West and wife Doris, and James David West; daughter, Sherry Graves and husband Billy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers, Clarence West and wife Elsie, Eugene West and wife Bertie, and sister, Edith Coates.

Funeral services conducted by Pastor Bud Goude will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the funeral home.

In memory of James, contributions may be given to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.

The family would like to express their thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Hospice, and also the staff at Walter Reed Convalescent Center.
