JAMES RICHARD ‘DICK’ WADDELL

It is with the heaviest of hearts that our family announces the passing of our beloved, brother, father and grandfather, James Richard “Dick” Waddell, 87, of Mathews, Virginia, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021. He moved to Mathews in 1992 with his cherished wife, Janis. Mesmerized by the everlasting beauty of the property and water views, it was the perfect setting to an amazing life and retirement. Dick was an alumnus of Virginia Tech, loved the football games and tailgating. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Walter Reed. He owned Waddell Construction for 35 years. He embraced travel and good times with friends and family. His kind and enduring demeanor will be deeply missed.

Dick was predeceased by his loving wife, Janis Weddington, and only daughter, Deborah Anne.
He is survived by his younger brother, David Barry; sons, Steven Richard, David Todd, and Richard Alan (Christine); grandchildren, Sarah Marie (Gregg), James Andrew (Megan), Rachel Anne (James), Ian Kyle, David Alan, and James Alexander; three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation was held at the family home, 1016 New Point Comfort Hwy., Mathews, on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, from 2-7 p.m. A funeral service was held on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, at 4 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews. Interment was held on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 S. Kings Hwy., Alexandria, Virginia. Please be advised that current state-mandated guidelines applied to all in attendance, including social distancing and appropriate face coverings.
