JAMES L. JENKINS

A memorial service for James L. Jenkins, 73, of Henrico, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Richmond. He died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

Mr. Jenkins was a Henrico County lawyer and served as chairman of the Richmond Metropolitan Authority board of directors for 28 years; he was serving as vice chairman at the time of his death.

Mr. Jenkins was a native of Norfolk, but he became deeply involved in community affairs in the Richmond region after graduating from the University of Virginia Law School in 1964. He served on the Henrico County Planning Commission, the Richmond Area Heart Association, the Richmond chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and as chairman of the Henrico County Mental Health Advisory Board, among numerous other community causes.

He was an active leader of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Mr. Jenkins worked as vice president and general counsel at Avec Electronics Corp., his father’s firm, in Henrico from 1964-1970, when he became president, and served until 1997. He also was managing partner for Delmar Development Corp., and served as an administrative hearing officer for the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel B. Jenkins; three daughters; two sons; four brothers, including Preston C. Jenkins of Gwynn’s Island; four sisters, including Holly J. Tillage of Gloucester, and eight grandchildren.
