JACOBA ‘JO’ MARGARET THOMPSON

Jacoba “Jo” Margaret Thompson, age 102, of Hayes, died at her home on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Jacoba was born in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, on June 5, 1921 to the late Floyd and Maude Adkison Carpenter. She married her childhood sweetheart George “Deb” Thompson on March 31, 1944. They moved to Williamsburg, Va., in 1953 after George left the Army. They owned and operated Thompson’s Grocery from 1958 until they sold the business in 1970. They moved to Gloucester in 1983. Jacoba was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class and Providence Baptist Church. Jacoba loved being outside in her yard, working in her flower beds, feeding the squirrels and birds. She was always ready to go back to West Virginia because she loved the mountains. She loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She lived a full life and touched many lives over the years and will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Deb” Thompson; great-granddaughter, Linleigh Faye Cole; four brothers, and one sister. Jacoba is survived by her children, George D. Thompson Jr. (Charlene) of Gloucester, Wanda Hansford of Hayes, Va., and Donna Holt (Darius) of Parrottsville, Tenn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robbie Hansford (Robin), Ron Hansford (Lisa), Nicole Taylor (Matthew), Heather Nicholson (Lee), Brianna Cole (Randy), Darius Holt Jr. (Mikayla), Tonya Holt, Susan Hartsell (Ronnie), Jennifer Sadler, Kim Sears, and 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Pastor Nathan Varnadore, beginning at 11 a.m. In memory of Jacoba, contributions may be made to Providence Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3501 Providence Road, Hayes, Va. 23072.
