JACKIE EARL SKINNER

Jackie Earl Skinner of Gloucester, peacefully passed away in his home on July 16, 2017.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1938 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where he graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1957. He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Burnette, on Nov. 22, 1959.

After having two children, Steve and Susie, Jackie and Brenda raised their family in Newport News, Virginia, where Jackie graduated from the Newport News Apprentice School in piping design.

Their children began having children of their own, and eventually Jackie and Brenda relocated to Gloucester, in 1996. There, Jackie was able to use the rural countryside to cultivate his interests, like gardening and beekeeping. He became actively involved in the Colonial Beekeepers Association, keeping hives on his White Marsh property, letting his grandchildren watch him care for the honeybees and eat fresh honeycomb in the summer. Over the years, he participated in community events and mentored many new beekeepers.

He was also a member of White Marsh Baptist Church, where he served as the treasurer. He also volunteered at the church’s food bank and its community Thanksgiving meals, dedicating many hours to improving the local community.

He was preceded by his parents, Jesse and Bessie; brother, Don, and grandson, Sean McNulty Jr.

Jackie is remembered and celebrated by the family dynasty he fathered: his wife, Brenda; son, Steve (Terry) and their children Sarah (Mark), Jeremiah (Hope), Isaiah (Hannah), Asa (Morganne), Mary and Hannah; daughter, Susie (Sean) and their daughter, Kristen (Adam).

In Jackie’s memory, contributions may be made to White Marsh Baptist Church, 5123 George Washington Memorial Hwy., White Marsh, Va. 23183 or the Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
