Island festival group ready for clear skies Saturday

Organizers of Saturday’s Gwynn’s Island Festival are looking forward to better weather this year for the 68th annual festival, which will begin at 9 a.m. on the Gwynn’s Island Civic Center grounds and will continue until 3:45 p.m. Festival organizers are excited about new musical groups, nearly 70 vendors and much more to keep festival-goers entertained.

Forecasts are for clear skies and a high around 80.

The annual “World Famous” chicken dinner that precedes each festival is scheduled to be held Friday from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Civic Center. Tickets for the dinner are $12 and are available at the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center, at the door or by calling 804-725-7860 or 804-725-7577. 

The one-mile fun run will kick off this year’s festival Saturday at 9 a.m. and the 5K Kukini Run will begin at 9:30. Prizes will be awarded for the top overall male and female, and the top male and female in each age group. Runners and walkers of al...
