IRVING SYLVESTER ROBERTSON JR.

Irving Sylvester Robertson Jr. of Gloucester, Va., peacefully passed away on January 1, 2026 at his home surrounded by his children.

Irving was born on October 22, 1938 in Shipman, Va., son of the late Irving Sylvester Robertson Sr. and Nannie Louise Robertson.

Irving attended Nelson County High School and completed his education in the United States Navy. He made his career at HI Newport News Shipbuilding where he retired as a Construction Supervisor. He found joy in serving at his former church, Menchville Baptist, Newport News, Va., and current church, Petsworth Baptist, Gloucester. His favorite pastimes were vegetable gardening, travel and, after retirement, playing golf and working jigsaw puzzles. Above all, Irving loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and strived to glorify Him and make Him known by loving his family well, service to others, boldly sharing the Gospel, and loving and encouraging his pastors. His children will always remember how well they were loved, protected and cherished, and his wisdom and sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ruby C. Robertson, and Edna M. Robertson of 15 years, and son, Irving Sylvester Robertson III “Robbie”; stepsons, Michael and Keith Thomas, and grandson, Maxxwell Robertson, and step-grandson, Matthew Thomas; siblings, Francis Roberts, William Howard Robertson, Margaret Javins, Adella Mae Layne, and Phyllis Colgan.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Robertson; daughters, Faye Gibson (Larry), Kaye Gilliam (Michael), Karen Rowland (Jim) and stepson, Jerome Thomas (Nancy); 21 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, and special family member Brenda Bates.

Irving’s Celebration of Life Service and burial was held at Petsworth Baptist Church in Gloucester, on Wednesday, January 7. The family received family and friends from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., with the service and burial immediately following.

Pastor John Pouchot officiated along with Pastor Dennis Hollandsworth and Pastor James Weston. Andrews Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Petsworth Baptist Church.
