Invasive species topic of Dragon Run meeting

The Friends of the Dragon Run will hold its first general meeting of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Community Room of the Gloucester Library, Main Street Center. The public is invited to the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be available.

Todd Engelmeyer, a district biologist for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will be the guest speaker. Engelmeyer will address the issue of invasive plants and animals in the watershed, including what is already here, what might arrive in the near future, and what is being done to meet these challenges.

Even though Dragon Run is considered to be "pristine," there are already invasive plants and animals altering the environment in and along the river, according to a release from Friends of the Dragon Run. Blue catfish and phragmites are already there and it is only a matter of time before other species such as nutria start to alter the landscape of the river.
