In Mathews: Pared-down budget presented

The Mathews Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday afternoon for a budget work session to establish budget priorities and goals. County Administrator Ramona Wilson presented the board with a budget that she had pared down from the unrestricted budget supervisors received at the beginning of the budget process in late January. That initial unrestricted budget included the requests from all departments and outside agencies and totaled $15,916,880 in county funds needed out of a total budget, including pass-through funds from state and federal agencies and capital expenditures, of $36.13 million. The budget, as it stood then, would have required a real estate tax increase of about 7 cents per $100 of assessed value, said Wilson. The current tax rate is 60 cents per $100 of assessed value. Wilson said that reductions she made in various areas, coupled with some revenue increases, had decreased the budget by $1,101,322, for total county expenditures of $14,815,447.
