Improvements to East River Boat Yard site topic of special meeting

Residents of the Mill Creek area in Bohannon gathered at the historic courthouse in Mathews last week to discuss a new site plan for the East River Boat Yard.

Two members of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors were present at last Thursday’s meeting—chairman Edwina Casey and Charles Ingram—and they were joined by county administrator Mindy Conner and Thomas Jenkins of the Department of Planning and Zoning. 

The purpose of the meeting, according to Jenkins, was to discuss the contents of the proposal, specifically how it relates to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission permitting process, as well as to highlight potential sources of funding and hear resident opinion.

“Our main concern is to secure the bulkheads,” Jenkins said, adding that preventing future erosion at the site and protecting the county from liability are key issues.
