HYUNG IL MOON

Hyung Il Moon, 55, of Williamsburg, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July, 5, 2018. 

He was born in Seoul, Korea, on Sept. 8, 1962 to Yongchuck Moon and Jung Ui Lee. He studied vocal performance at Seoul National University and won the prestigious Dong-a Music Competition in 1988. After completing further training at Mannes School of Music in New York, he built an active career in the United States and performed with numerous operas. Sensing a call to ordained ministry, he entered Drew Theological School in 1999 was eventually ordained an elder of the United Methodist Church in 2008. He currently served as pastor of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church in Gloucester, Virginia.

He was an associate pastor of Korean United Methodist Church of Greater Washington and subsequently served Prince Edward Charge in Farmville, Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, and Urbanna United Methodist Church. In addition to his warmth, ready laughter and compassion, he generously shared his gift of music throughout his pastoral ministry. His repertoire ranged from beloved hymns and worship music to his old favorites by Schubert. 

He was a veteran of ROK Army Special Forces.

He is survived by his wife, Yeon Sook Jung; two daughters, Erin and Alvina; mother, Jung Ui Lee, and two brothers, Ki-bong and Ui-chul, in Korea.

A prayer vigil was held from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Susanna Wesley UMC, 3900 George Washington Memorial Highway, Ordinary.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service at the church.
