Hyco House to hit auction block

Tours are ongoing by appointment for the upcoming auction of historic Hyco House at 10941 Buckley Hall Road in Mathews Court House.

The auction, conducted by Tranzon Fox, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Built in 1813 and added onto in the 1830s and beyond, the house was most recently the home of furniture craftman Sam Forrest, who died on May 5.

When Forrest bought the imposing white four-level house, he decided to re-name it “Haiku House.” Regardless of what it’s called, the house has a long history in Mathews, serving for several decades as a home and medical office for Dr. James William Dorsey Haynes.

Situated in town on over 1.2 acres, Hyco House is currently permitted as a “lodge,” and has 11 bedrooms and six baths, plus a large, new outbuilding that served as Forrest’s woodworking shop.

Bidders can name their price through online bidding. Tours are being scheduled by appointment through Monday. The property was assessed for $447,300 in 2020.
