Hurricanes, Swordfish play in weekend tournament

The U15 Swordfish and U10 Hurricanes of the Baystars youth soccer program competed in the Coastal Kickfest Tournament over the weekend in Virginia Beach, placing first and second, respectively, in their divisions.

The Swordfish captured the tournament for the second year in a row. Melanie Mueller scored five goals over the weekend for the Swordfish, followed by Leah Hyde, Charlotte Small and Lacey Donnelly with one goal each. Riley Gale and Small served as goalkeepers for the team.

The Hurricanes won two out of their three games to place second overall in the U11 division, though they are a U10 team. They defeated the Old Dominion Soccer Club Barracudas, 3-2, and Beach FC Storm, 5-1, on Saturday. The Hurricanes went on to defeat the Chesapeake Soccer Club Galaxy, 5-4, Sunday morning. In their last match, the Hurricanes fell by one point to the U11 Churchland Soccer League Gladiators, 4-3.

Throughout the weekend, Theo Collins scored eight goals, followed by Declan Long and Jep Doley with four goals each. Jack Sheridan, Gabe Franklin, Abel Williams, Collins, Doley and Long all contributed assists. Leading the defense were Sheridan, Braiden Fry and Ryder Jarrell. Spencer Leigh recorded 24 saves as goalkeeper during the first three matches, while Bryson Foster made five saves in the final match.

The Hurricanes will play once more this season in the Baystars Surf & Turf Soccer Fest on May 30.

Whitecaps

In the last match of the regular season, the Baystars FC U11 Whitecaps traveled to Prince George on Saturday to defeat the Xtreme FC, 2-0. Sam Gill scored the sole goal of the first half, which was assisted by Ryan Seay. Triffon Luechauer recorded 10 saves in the net before halftime.

Ronen Lane extended the lead for the Whitecaps by scoring on a pass from Colton Bergstrom. Lue-chauer added seven more saves before the match concluded.

Ending the season with a 7-1 record, the Whitecaps secured the National Premiere League Division 3 title. The team will play next in the Williamsburg Invitational Memorial Day Tournament this weekend.
