The Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation awarded its Blue Devils Ambassador Award to Mathews High School sophomore Hunter Owens during the recent MHS spring concert.
The award was established to provide a music student with a $600 scholarship to attend the James Madison University Summer Music Camp in July, said a press release. Owens will attend workshops with nationally-recognized clinicians and JMU School of Music faculty and Marching Royal Dukes band staff. He will also receive training in peer teaching and leadership sessions, all while staying in the JMU dorms.
Owens was selected from a pool of four applicants currently in the MHS music program. The program is under the direction of Mark Givens, a JMU alumnus. The applications were forwarded to three music professionals from Richmond to Williamsburg who are not affiliated with MHS or the band program, said the release.
