The Hampton Roads Sanitation District, which oversees Mathews County’s sewage system, is searching for a new pump station site downtown.
Mathews Planning and Zoning Director Thomas Jenkins told the Mathews County Board of Supervisors that a resident had expressed fear of an eminent domain taking of property, but that HRSD had said that any transaction would be purely voluntary and that any property owner who agreed to sell would be fully compensated. Jenkins made his comments during Tuesday night’s meeting, which was held in the historic courthouse.
Supervisor G.C. Morrow asked whether HRSD has any areas in mind for the pump station, and County Administrator Mindy Conner said they were looking at Church Street, Chambers Street and the Hands Across Mathews property, which is located behind Mathews Pharmacy.
Jenkins said that HRSD has no method of forcing a homeowner to move, and that if undue pressure had been applied to someone, the district would look into the matter.
