HRSD able to help customers experiencing hardships

The Hampton Roads Sanitation District has received $8.7 million in CARES Act funding to help customers faced with past-due bills resulting from COVID-19-related financial hardships. Funds will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and must be disbursed by Jan. 29.

Information is being distributed via door hangers to more than 40,000 customers throughout the HRSD service region who may be eligible to receive financial relief through the program.

Customers may be eligible if they have suffered a loss of income related to COVID-19 and must complete a brief questionnaire by phone or online to determine eligibility.

CARES Act funds may only be applied to past due water and wastewater charges for the timeframe of March 1, 2020 through Dec. 30, 2020, and cannot be applied to any late fees, interest or penalty charges. HRSD is waiving all fees and penalties from HRSD wastewater treatment balances incurred from March 1 through Dec. 30, 2020.
