House fire

A house fire Tuesday afternoon destroyed the second floor of a home in Gloucester’s Founders Mill subdivision and caused heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the rest of the structure, according to Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief J.D. Clements. A family of five was displaced, with the Red Cross arranging temporary housing. “I’m just thankful the family got out uninjured,” Clements said. Thirteen members of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department and four members of Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue assisted the 25 Gloucester firefighters in putting out the blaze, with Clements praising the coordinated effort of the three departments. The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in helping to control the scene. While an exact cause for the fire has yet to be determined, Clements said it appears to be accidental in nature.
