Honoring Washington’s ancestor

A new grave stone for Mildred Reade Warner, great-grandmother of George Washington, was dedicated in the Warner Hall Graveyard in Gloucester on Oct. 18 in a ceremony attended by several members of the National Society of Washington Family Descendants. NSWFD arranged for and primarily funded the replacement for the original 1600s stone, which had crumbled into rubble. Shown with the stone are, from left, Ed Truslow, president of the Williamsburg Chapter, NSWFD; Peggy Mathis, chapter member and eighth granddaughter of Mildred Reade Warner, and her husband, Jim Mathis. NSWFD members enjoyed a reception at the Inn at Warner Hall following the dedication and traveled on to Richmond for the NSWFD annual meeting.
