Honor Guard salute

Facing a fast-approaching storm, Mathews American Legion Post 83 held a brief Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, with time only for a gun salute and the playing of “Taps” before participants had to run for cover as lightning flashed, thunder cracked, and a drenching downpour began. Post 83 Honor Guard riflemen Willie Hubbard, Bill Morris, Ray Fleischer, C.A. Howard (hidden behind flag) and Ron Lambert, and bugler Morey Alexander, from left, prepare to perform the brief while those in attendance salute the flags. Post 83 also served as honor guard Monday morning at Church of the Visitation Cemetery in Middlesex.
