Homecoming celebration Saturday for Indian Road Chapel

The Indian Road Chapel Foundation will sponsor a homecoming celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Woods Cross Roads.

The Rev. Vincent Pryor, pastor of New Mount Zion, said, “The Indian Road chapel was the oldest African-American religious establishment in Gloucester founded around 1865 and built by slaves.”

The chapel once served as the community center for revivals, gospel concerts, worship services and other neighborhood fundraisers.

Pryor said the chapel was destroyed by a fire in 1984 but plans are underway to improve the site and eventually rebuild the chapel.

Special guests for the homecoming celebration will be the Gloucester/Mathews Male Chorus, Men of Faith and Margaret Jones. The public is invited to attend.
