A group of local Episcopalians drove from Gloucester to Palmyra, New York, on May 15 to begin a physically challenging spiritual retreat. For the fourth time, the Holy Rollers set out on a bicycling adventure. This year, their route followed the Erie Canal from Palmyra to Buffalo, New York, crossed the Peace Bridge into Ontario, Canada, and then went north along the Niagara River to their destination, Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. The ride took three days going each direction, and the group returned to Palmyra on Sunday, May 21, after biking 330 miles in six days. Springtime weather was perfect for the unique experience of riding beside the Erie Canal, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and Lake Erie. In spite of a strong headwind for 60 miles the first day and steady rain for 60 miles on another day, the Holy Rollers met their challenges. Stopping in Brockport, New York, the morning of May 28, the group attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The group is shown here at Niagara Falls. They are, from left, Pat Roane of Ware Episcopal Church, the Rev. Sven vanBaars of Abingdon Episcopal Church, Nancy Choquette (Abingdon), Bill Baer (St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy), Judy Dobson and Linda Tjossem (both from Abingdon).
